Santa Teresa
162x

The naval Battle of the Downs took place on October 21, 1639 during the Eighty Years' War, and was a decisive defeat of the Spanish, commanded by Admiral Antonio de Oquendo, by the United Provinces, commanded by Lieutenant-Admiral Maarten Tromp.

When it sailed against the Dutch the Spanish fleet consisted of 67 ships. The Dutch fleet attacked the Spanish in heavy fog. Most of the Spanish ships, either intentionally or accidently, ran aground on the friendly English coast, but the Santa Teresa was isolated by a squadron of eight Dutch ships. The Dutch launched fireships, and with little wind, the Santa Teresa was unable to get away. Five hundred men, out of six hundred total, went down with the ship.

The Santa Teresa was arned with 36 guns and displaced 1,100 tons.
