Dutch ship in a Gale 1620 Jan Porcellis

A three-masted trading ship, possibly a fluyt, is shown in the centre running before the wind though a stormy sea. Only
two of its sails are spread, the mainsail flapping loose in the wind and the foresail drawing with the yard half lowered. The topsails and lateen mizzen are furled. Figures can be seen attending to the rigging on the deck. On the far right the stern of another ship is visible, the rest cut off by the edge of the picture. On the far left another large ship follows that in the centre under billowing main- and fore-courses. A barrel floats in the waves in the right foreground. The sky occupies half the picture space and the dark clouds to the right enhance the atmospheric effect.
