An Embarkation Scene
1660
Ludolf Backhuysen

Crowds gathered on the shore watch while people set off in small boats, with Dutch flags, to join the fleet in the distance. It is not known exactly who is involved, and what the occasion is, but they must have been important! Although the painting was formerly known as ‘The Landing of William of Orange at Scheveningen’ by Ludolf Backhuysen, it seems that it depicts an embarkation rather than a landing.
